Pus Vomit - Degrade The Worthless - Reviews PERVERTED (Brian Castillo) www.myspace.com/bricazgrindPus Vomit – Degrade The Worthless Full Length CD 2009 Berdugo Records Track list: 01 - She Died A Virgin 02 - Soaked In Her Own Blood 03 - God Help Me Rape The Dead 04 - Pungent Rotting Flesh 05 - Self Inflicted Wound 06 - Dead For Rent 07 - Your Dead Body I Molest 08 - Dead Remains 09 - Retching Lacerated Entrails 10 - Dismembered Virgin Limbs The first thing I noticed about this release is the sinister air of iniquity and ugliness that it has. Now, whether it was intentional or not, the artwork’s color scheme (or lack there of) hints that there is something very different about it compared to the many modern death metal albums currently saturating the scene. Put it in a row with any five brutal death metal CDs that you have that were released in the same number of recent years and Degrade The Worthless, the debut album from Pus Vomit (Philippines) sticks out just like a dead finger nail. Speaking of dead, there are no less than four tracks here with a title which includes that particular word. In fact, all song titles look as if they were pulled out of some serial killer’s personal journal containing writings about the gruesome acts he plans to do or had already done to his victims. Herein lies words that are perverse, straight to the point, and strangely enough, all too personal. It all seems so real. The music itself tends to mirror the concepts presented. Each track is attacked with a level of “fuck it all” recklessness that it almost threatens to fall apart; much like the mind of a killer realizing the consequences of what he’s done but goes on doing it again and again for his own satisfaction. In this way, Pus Vomit’s music has something in common with early Lividity: it does not care about having the fastest blasts or being the most technical band out there. What they do accomplish is to deliver a thick, almost suffocating brand of brutal death metal that incorporates, no… molests elements of hardcore and sludge. Note though that sludge parts are not blues based grooves. Instead, they are more like a fucked up soundtrack to having an elephant step on your head and having the giant move its foot back and forth so as to drive your face deeper into the ground. Not everything about Pus Vomit material is about simplistic brutality though. The drumming for example exhibits such a penchant for spicing up parts that it effectively pushes forward sections that are otherwise built on cycling riffs – which in a way, is a technique quite similar to that used by Lust Of Decay. The guitar playing is an amalgamation of various influences ranging from Cannibal Corpse-like marching riffs to modern day Dying Fetus beat downs and Devourment style slams. The guitarist has once even said that he is a big fan of Inveracity. Obviously, it would be hard for one to pigeonhole this record into a single stylistic category. And that for me is a very good sign. The vocals on the other hand, depending on the track being played, shift from mostly accompanying the rhythms, then into more abstract arrangements. Compared to the earliest of Pus Vomit releases, the vocals here are more guttural, essentially ditching the earlier pig squeals that have painfully become so trendy in the last few years. So if you’re the type of listener who’s looking for the most technical arrangements, fastest sweeps, and rhythms so tight that it would cause you to asphyxiate faster than David Carradine, I suggest you look elsewhere. But if you crave something that is well produced but at the same time raw and powerful, and is the musical equivalent of cutting off your own limb then keeping the severed body part in your bedroom just to watch it rot, then its time that you eat up some Pus Vomit. XXX SCRAWLSHOP ZINE (Rallye Ibanez) www.myspace.com/dixiewhiskeyThere is a major difference in knowing Cavite and actually living there and absorbing its murderous atmosphere. With grisly tall tales being passed around like cheap vodka and giant reefers, surrounded by gigantic trees, far from where people can hear, you can get lost, go insane or get murdered around these parts and Cavite will devour you whole. Pus Vomit's recordings have this dark, trademark sound, reeking of this rancid stench that will unmistakeably spell out Cavite aurally. No other place will spew out such sounds of obscenity and disgust quite like Pus Vomit, who rose to notoriety through their infamous brutal gigs in their hometown, more specifically, in Roel "Tripalium" Mores' infamous annual metalfest Rural Carnage (with occasional forays / killing sprees from Olongapo to Davao to Quezon City). Among the many CD's that floated around during those fests were their raw but evil demos, and their split with Olongapo's Down from the Wound, adorned with some pretty heinous cover art. Pus Vomit are just obnoxiously, ridiculously, sickeningly brutal that you'd just nod bang your head in disbelief, which tends one to believe there really is something in the water deep in the eerie moonlit crevices of that town. Now, imagine collecting all of the best stuff from those diy recordings and format them to a loud studio setting (done of course at Earbender Studios, with Macoy at the helm) with a more plowing, hate fueled sound and ruthless playing. Package it in a damn good looking layout with a new logo by Jamie of Splatterproject designs and finish the deal with sick artwork by none other than Devourment's Mike Majewski himself stamping his approval, and you've got "Degrade the Worthless", their debut CD on Alex IDP's Berdugo Records. This is a damn solid record. Deeply rooted in the newer US brutal death metal style, all of you seeking something innovative and totally new should steer clear. But those who are looking for a sick, pummelingly brutal good time and well played and well composed sick shit are advised to pick this one up. Like the other entities of PHDM's Unholy Trinity (DFTW and Human Mastication) there is a local touch to their craft, but still has a distinct sound, and you won't mistake it for any other than Pus Vomit. What makes this collection of songs much killer is the fact that them coming from the murder / corpse capitol, Cavite, that maybe, maybe some of these songs are true, or directly inspired by sick hometown tales, such as the infamous Cavite rape-murders, human meat in corner burger stands and violent warehouse gigs deep in the South of Cavite. The kind where if you got jacked and cut open for cash or cheap drugs, you can be there rotting for a week before fucking up the area with your scent and getting found. This is where the trio of filthy, plowing riffs, belligerent drumwork and ugly gutturals/demon gurgles do their damage in the brain, drilling those images with sick notes and time changes. PV shines most like a sharp bolo to the gut when it comes to the slowdown, mid-paced sinister parts; it's like wading through murky Cavite swamps, where corrupt, fat cops look for dismembered rape murder victims or where they also observe their ritualistic executions. Pus Vomit's only wish is to destroy and defile and murder; they achieve this without a doubt on this CD. Stripped down to an almost minimalist, badass, don't-give-a-fuck 3 piece lineup doing the damage, it is less cluttered and makes their overall sound massive and clear in the mix. Too bad these dudes don't play that often, we don't know what sick preoccupations Pus Vomit has in their hometown at night, and it's better to keep it at that; but it does make their occasional gigs much more intense. This is a solid release that could make all those lame local commercial slob ass metal fucks look weak and stupid. This is just too sick for the "Musiklaban" or "Pulp" crowd - they will never get this, sending them crawling back on their knees raped and violated with their Valley of Chrome shirts ripped and their emo hair shredded like a motherfucker. hahaha. - Rx Zenabi

I submitted a revised version of my review to metal archives.. Alright you can lower your eyebrow now.. Say all the negative things you want about that site but fact is: It's one of two main sites on the net [the other being Myspace] that people visit for info on Pus Vomit. Probably gets more hits than any popular webzine. I say if its something that we can use to promote the album, then use it. Anyways I also sent a request for them to change the "current label" field but that hasn't been updated yet.

Pus Vomit - Degrade The Worthless - ReviewBRUTALISM (Alex Stabba) www.brutalism.comPus Vomit - Degrade The Worthless TRACKLISTING 1. She Died A Virgin 2. Soaked In Her Own Blood 3. God Help Me Rape The Dead 4. Pungent Rotting Flesh 5. Self Inflicted Wound 6. Dead For Rent 7. Your Dead Body I Molest 8. Dead Remains 9. Retching Lacerated Entrails 10. Dismembered Virgin Limbs Philippines based Brutal Death Metal outfit Pus Vomit is back to take revenge. After several demos and Split releases, “Degrade The Worthless” is the very first full length album of these gore obsessed maniacs. Expect nothing else than real brutal stuff with a good and clean production, which is raw and powerful at the same time. Pus Vomit´s music is a bloodsoaked piece of guttural brutality with guitar riffs ranging from Cannibal Corpse-like tunes to parts bands like Gorgasm or Devourment would use. The drums are also pretty variable and contribute (of course) fast sections as well as slamming components and multiple doublebass attacks. After you read these lines, you´ll surely know the direction of the lyrics. I guess I don´t have to mention they mainly deal with necrophilia and gory things. “Degrade The Worthless” isn´t extremely innovative or revolutionary, but a solid piece of underground violence with 10 cool songs that will surely help the band to find new supporters. Check Pus Vomit out if you like Brutal Death Metal and the before mentioned bands.

Distro is doing a killer job distributing local materials. So his hard work makes up for the name. He also archives local fanzines so chances are he might have a copy of W.O.D. ;D M.Y.O. stands for "Make Your Own" to those who doesn't know.
