An excerpt from my personal testimony of last Saturday's EARTH DECAY show in San Pablo City.
Here are a few bands from last night that really stood out for me:
WEST tore it all up, ripped it all to shreds and ungracefully shook me from my cool evening reverie -- fresh lakeside air in my nostrils was replaced with the nostalgic stench of urban violence! Hanep yung emotional and instinctive response that you get from yourself when you are assaulted by music like this -- "Like I'm in my 20s and I'm angry..."
Lokal boys, CHILIDOGS was an outstanding example of raw and angry aggressive, fun wrapped in a bundle of awareness. There are some decadent and hedonistic ideals that rule over many so-called musicians and artists currently polluting the airwaves, the internet and rock clubs that solely believe in "music lang naman" or "all for fun". Chillidogs were fun, yes. But they didn't just have "just music" on their side.
GINSENG LUZON took archetypal modes and movements from the program list of aggressive familiarity and spun them around to create. CREATE! It is very rare that I go home from a show with a band's songs still reverberating in my skull. Can't say much more, I'm listening to their stuff right now, haha!
OF WOLVES AND SWINE made me play the guessing game throughout their whole set! Mostly due to their singer. He was just so undeniably THERE. Being both self-consciously sensitive and embroiled in rage at the same time -- like the calm and humble demeanor of reluctance conflicted by an empowering stance, screaming "This stage is MINE!"
In the middle of all the rockin' and rollin', the punkin' and corin' was an Audio Visual presentation that aimed to enforce notions of empowerment that many of us already unknowingly have. A bit too short for the amount of information it aimed to share but according to Chuck from Greenpeace, this was a highly condensed version of itself. No doubt shortened to its vital bits to instill the ideas quickly and easily and as a consideration to the rest of the night's schedule. Many good points that were brought up and I was hoping more would participate when the mic was opened for questions but to be completely fair, maraming mahiyain sa atin talaga!
;D
Ang saya kagabi grabe, kakainggit dahil yung ganyang klaseng kilusan, fueled by awareness, consciousness and a dedication to the future of a community. Yan ang gusto namin makamit din sa aming mumunting mga Metal Communities pero siyempre, mas nauuna ang "Opportunity" sa priorities nung nakararami kesa sa "Community".
Good thing we still have credible metal zines and forums of discussion, a few scattered shows and the indomitable will to say "NO" when everyone else says "YES".
Might seem impossible now but we're working on it. We're already running activities and projects that fly under the radar AND because we don't care about "popularity" or "profit", we're moving waaaay ahead of schedule. Our first goal has been met tenfold and soon, we'll all be hidden again in the shadows. DEATH TO FALSE MANGOES!
